Hi,
I will be in Italy during the last week of May. I am looking for areas to hike (difficulty of hikes: moderate to hard) for a few days including sleeping in mountain huts on the way.
Does anyone have recommendations or know of good places to hike during this time of the year?
And have any knowledge regarding mountain huts that are open during this time of the year?
Thank you!
(Recommendations for Gran Paradiso and Aosta Valley are also good)

Late May is a bit early for high mountain hikes, I'm not even sure if many mountain huts are open this time of year (especially the ones that are manned). There is a week long hike in Stelvio Natioal Park called "Ortler High Mountain trail", but this is way to early to undertake in late May. Parts of the lower lying Dolomites or same for the Aosta may be better. And the area around the big lakes in Northern Italy. In May I would have rather travelled to the Garda lake for hiking than Stelvio, Dolomites or Aosta.

The most attractive trails are in the snow. The lower one's are fine.
Huts: many CAI huts have a winter local where you can sleep and cook the food you brought with you.
It depends on the hut, however. Almost all huts have a website.

Aosta Valley: forget the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, but there are tons of hiking possibilities along the sunny slopes from Courmayeur up to Valle de Gressoney (and from there via Val Sesia - Varallo - Lake Orta - Lake Maggiore - Lake Lugano - Lake Como up to Alpe Orobbie).

End of May is too early for high altitude hiking in the areas you mentioned. We've had a poor spring with a lot of rain and the snow hasn't melted. Even some paths may appear clear but then around a shady corner you may find gullies of snow which are difficult to get across.

Most refuges open mid June. Lower altitude ones, or those that can be reached by car open a lot earlier.
