This mostly transient neighborhood, from tourist-central Plaka to more residential districts of Athens, like Neos Kosmos and Petralona, was named after a pre-World War II bed-manufacturing factory that was owned by a businessman named Koukakis. Serviced by two metro stations, Acropolis and Fix, this is one of the most sought-after residential areas of Athens, due to its proximity to the Acropolis. A resurgence of the area has followed the pedestrianization of G. Olympiou street (on Koukaki Square). Faliron Square is also popular, and its many alternative bars and cozy eateries are attracting hip young things from all over the city.
